What If?

What If's are scary...

"What if I never went to PITT?"
"What if I were born a boy?"
"What if my parents never had anymore kids after me?"
"What if I never met that person?"
"What if I never had that experience?"
"What if I never witnessed that atrocity?"
"What if I never listened to that album?"
"What if I stayed home that night?"
"What if I would have said yes instead of no..."
"What if I boarded that plane..."
"What if I never left..."
"What if I just kept my mouth shut..."

Life is full of choices, and the smallest things you do can change EVERYTHING.
Just food for thought.

Touche

Now this is interesting...

I stole this picture from TIME magazine (my favorite) from the World Fencing Championships in Turkey. Is it just me, or does that look like it hurts?

No Halloween for me this year

I don't know how I feel about this Halloween thing. Initially I wanted to celebrate becuase I've only ever observed how much fun it could be.

When I was younger I wasn't allowed to go trick-or-treating in with my friends or in other neighborhoods. We went with the family, no more than 2-3 blocks, then we came home by 8 and turned our porch lights off so kids wouldn't ring the door bell. AND, I hate candy, so the pile would sit there for months and months wasted. So I never really got excited about it.

But once you're older, Halloween has a completely different meaning. Its an excuse for girls to dress up in slutty costumes and party, and no one can really say anything to them. "I can dress up, IT'S HALLOWEEN!" Ever since I moved out of my parents' house I haven't participated in this a single time. It always seemed fun. My friends talked about how much fun they had. So this year I decided to maybe consider taking part. BUT the whole costume thing was way too overwhelming for me.

I wanted to be a Disney princess (but apparently that's too childish), I tried on a pirate costume, an inmate costume, a jungle princess costume, a firefighter costume.... all of which looked ridiculous.
Do people actually do this?

Not only that, but who is going to pay $200 for a costume made of itchy synthetic fabric, to be a fairy for ONE NIGHT. I'd rather buy a pair of boots.. (specifically the Matisse "Montgomery" boot)

The most surprising thing is that despite the recession, the halloween industry is booming, actually now higher than previous years.
Really, America? We're all going broke and THIS is what we choose to spend our money on? And then we wonder why the rest of the world looks at us the way that they do. It's because we're idiots. We're obese, money wasting idiots. We're fatter than any other country in the world. We waste more money and resources than any other country in the world. And Halloween does nothing to help that. Therefore, as of now, I am choosing not to take in such foolishness.

Friends... How many of us have them?

Recently I've been noticing little things that my friends do, how they act, what they say.... and it's really opened my eyes to what people are in my life for the right reasons and what people aren't.
I am really lucky to have great people in my life, but I still think it's really important to appreciate your friends and try to treat them as they treat. Show the same consideration that they show you.

I've also been noticing little things that people say whether it be on twitter or facebook or whatever. I want to surround myself with people who are as focused as I am and carry themselves in a certain way, so I find myself distancing myself from people that don't fit that and gravitating towards the people that do.

For example, the people I'm closest to have a purpose in their life. They dedicate themselves to being the best they can whether its at work or school or whatever their goals may be. And then I see those that sit around all day not doing anything, talking about nothing, thinking about nothing, working towards nothing, and as horrible as it sounds I don't want to surround myself with people like that.

I'd would rather be around people who have a certain level of motivation, and those that will push me to be better. Another example...If I have a friend who is on top of their schoolwork and I'm slacking, watching them will make me want to do better.

I'm also gravitating towards people who have a certain level of maturity or carry themselves in a certain way and who is able to engage in the kinds of conversations I like to have. I don't want to be around people who don't know how to alter their behavior depending on what setting their in, or people who have zero life experience and can't hold a conversation or looks at things from different perspectives, or people who only talk about things that they think other people like rather than finding out what really interests them despite the opinions of others.

Point is... I've been hearing a lot of people talking about how I'm not really around campus anymore. I don't really just sit in the union anymore, or sit in the library pretending to study anymore, or sit in market central for hours. I have things to do. I have goals to reach. And what I don't have is time to be wasted. Even when I do just wanna chill and relax, it's going to be with people who are on a level somewhere near mine (not to blow my head up).

Birthday

My birthday was Wednesday last week, September 30th. I must say, it was one of the best birthdays I've had in years.

It wasn't over the top or super extravagant, but I didn't want all of that. I got to take a break from the little stressors of my everday life, spend time with the people I truely enjoy being around and just relax.

It felt so good to be reminded how much I'm cared about, which then reminded me how much I care about them.
There are a few others I would have liked to see over the last week... my family, a few close friends that are far away.... but for the most part I was just happy. comfortable. at ease.

and I'm thankful for those who helped me celebrate another year in my life.

But with starting a new year as me, I thought about certain changes I might need to make. It opened my eyes to the direction I want my life to move in, and the things I may have to let go that might deter me from that.

All in all I feel good. And that's all I really wanted..
